Concerts, fuck yeah!
So I just saw David Byrne and St Vincent perform at the State Theatre here in Sydney, part of the official fucking Sydney Festival. It was an amazing fucking concert. Seriously great.
There’s so much to love about it, but let’s skip to the bit that proves it was fucking good. The State Theatre is nice, but it’s one of the stuffiest theatres in Sydney. They’re hung up on all their heritage and shit. So things like, they ban photography and the whole venue is seated, getting up and dancing, well there’s nowhere really to do that and it’s kind of fucking frowned on, dontchaknow?
So anyway, tonight all the rules were broken. Photos, videos, dancing, the lot. Fuck, you know it’s a good gig when the stiffs in the third balcony get up and dance.
So much to love. David Byrne’s big on choreography, even though he himself dances like a poorly operated marionette. His dancing is so honest though that there’s no way you could fault it. St Vincent is adorable. They’re both great musicians (she shreds the guitar like it’s nobody’s business!) and at one point Dave played a bugle, I did not expect that.
Musical highlight was the part where they started playing an odd solo and my concert-buddy and I turned to each other simultaneously and exclaimed in pure excited music-nerdery “Theremin solo!!!!!”
That’s right fuckers, a motherfucking theremin solo.
Staging wise they did great stuff with the band. At times setting them up like a shitty chorus line of one of the gangs in Westside Story and then getting them to march patterns and so on. It was way more awesome than it sounds.
So this isn’t quite the same setlist but it is basically the same level of awesome. Here’s a version NPR recorded earlier. Just fucking watch it already!
